START-UP: Don’t wait for opportunities to knock, open your doors!

In my primary school days, as a young Boy Scout member; I learnt one life lesson which has contributed to my personal development. If you are familiar with scouting, by now, you should have known the simple but vital lesson I have gained from the movement.

Our scout master who was aware of challenges and opportunities waiting for us after our school years had laid so much emphasis on the scout motto: Be prepared!

We have all grown up and chosen different path in our career, but this life lesson has been useful to those of us who care to adhere to the slogan. It has been helpful to me in launching all ideas and businesses I have started in life.

I enjoin you to follow me as I analyse the key factors that will prepare you for opportunities to launch your ideas.

Have an idea  There are so many ways to conceive ideas. Inspiration comes from what we see, hear, touch or experience. Everyday, many things come to our mind consciously or unconsciously while we are on our daily life routine: bathing, driving, cooking, reading, chatting, watching TV etc. You need to be thoughtful, creative, attentive and mindful to be able to conceive idea from experiences and inspiration of life.

You can draw idea from what has already been done by some other people and do it in a different, sophisticated, simple or better way. You can also introduce something new. Though invention is rare and I doubt if anything is new.

From my own perspective, some ideas appear new to us only because they are done in a better or sophisticated method. If you have some great thought on your mind, think it over and over again, your brain will be attracted to it and it will stick to it.

Put it in writing  If you have a lot of thought and ideas in your memory at a time, you may lose the best ones before the day break. Ideas are like birds, they have wings. They won’t stay long!

Get your notebook and pen along with you wherever you go. Second option is your smart phone. If your ideas are written down, they are like birds in aviary, each time you want to hear them tweet, you can visit them.

Re-visit and refine  Gold passes through fire before it eventually becomes valuable and precious stone. For your idea to become a hit, you have to check on it often, do a lot of editing, rewriting, adjustment, cancellation and perfection. Don’t let your written ideas become another thriller novel on the shelf.

Make it simple ” simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” – Leonardo Da Vinci Don’t ruin the whole idea with complexity. Make it is as simple as possible, so that you will find it easy to understand, easier to come up with a plan and more easier to share and present to people.

Write a plan  Writing down your idea is great, refining it is superb, but writing a plan to execute ( accomplish ) your idea is perfect! Writing or making a plan may differ, depending on what your idea is all about and your motive ( for profit or non-profit) .

It may be construction of an architectural edifice in the midst of the sea, starting a company or small enterprise, travelling all the capital cities of the world or starting a charity; your road to success will be smooth with a map ( plan).

Communicate  Convey your idea to the outside world with passion. It will generate both negative and positive reaction from people. Communicating your idea to people will actually give you the opportunity to test the concept before going far.

There will be believers and there will be naysayers. Their responses may drive you back to your table to know if your idea is worthy. But if you believe in yourself and your idea, follow it. Those who don’t believe in you may eventually follow you.

Network  Connect with people who think like you do. Social media network has been one of greatest platform to meet people who share your view. Interact with them and surround yourself with those who believe in your greatness among them.

Raise fund  This is an interesting and most challenging part of the process. It is easy for people to pat you on the back for coming up with a unique and brilliant idea, but coughing out money from their purse will make them have a rethink on the same great idea.

Obtaining fund may be challenging, but not impossible. Putting everything in place and following the few mentioned processes above will prepare you well to source for fund and make it possible for you to be funded partially or fully.

Launch  You will always have an edge to launch your idea, if you are prepared for the unexpected opportunities that may come knocking. Opportunities are everywhere, it is just that most of us lack the will to look farther.

I am not saying it is an easy task to launch your idea, but being prepared for predictable and unforeseeable opportunities when they come will make an icing on the cake for you to launch your idea.

Having mentioned the steps to launch your ideas, they are actually the golden keys to unlock the doors for opportunities instead of waiting for them to come knocking.
