Do you want to promote your business online and introduce your
products or services to the world, but you don’t know how to go about it?
Perhaps, you have limited budget to market your small business online.

Whether you already have a website or you don’t have one yet ( Though, I
suggest you have a website when your business is growing, so that people
will take you more serious ) you still need to promote your business and
product online.

In this post, I will be sharing free and effective ways to promote your
business online. Below are few things you can do to promote your business.

1. FACEBOOK

I laugh at friends who often complain of low patronage when they start
their new small business and those who fear it may take a long while to get
the first sales because of their limited budget on marketing and promotion. Yet, they have 1,000+ friends and followers on FB. Then I always ask, what benefit are you deriving from your facebook network?

You can simply promote your product with your facebook account. Having
a large circle of friends on facebook means your update will be visible to a
lot of people. If you want to take it further by separating your personal
identity from your business, you can create a facebook page with your
business name/product.

Facebook fan page can be created from your personal FB account, like I did
for one of my retail businesses Phones&Gadgets

After creating a page, you will click LIKE on the page to be the first person to promote the business ( If you don’t like it, how do you expect me to like it?) then you will have to invite as much friends as possible to like the page, which costs you nothing.

If a friend likes the page, FB will also help you by informing your other
friends that one of your friends has liked the page, thereby suggesting the
page to those friends ( referral ).

On the page, you can post features, prices, photos, discount sales update,
hours of operation and other information relating to your business/product. You may decide to promote the page organically at no cost by inviting more friends, or promote the page by paid promotion to facebook.

You can also join facebook groups related to your business niche to discuss
matters affecting the industry. Leaving a meaningful and informative
comments on such groups will create attention for your profile, while you
seize the chance to drop link to your fan page or website.

If you have made meaningful contribution to the group and they find some
useful information on your comments, with link to your page, they may
click and check on your store to find out what it is all about.

2. TWITTER

Unlike FB, Twitter has limited space for word characters to update a status
( tweet). So, you have to be smart and wise to make use of the medium to
get information passed across your target.

Aside followers and the people I follow on twitter, my post powerful tool is the Hash tag # code. I use this hash tag to get the attention of my target. I also get a broadcast repeat through RT (Retweet) using this code.

You too can achieve this by:
(i) coming up with a short, but meaningful post with # on keywords
(ii) short code of link to your page/website
(iii) Photo of your products with your contact information on the photo

Apart from the message being seen by your followers, there is high
possibility of a RT which increases your publicity.

3. E-COMMERCE

There are online e-commerce stores that allow customers/subscribers to set up their own e-store on their portal. Setting up your own e-store on these sites will only require you to subscribe to the site for free, upload your business details and photo of your products with price and contact details.

Through this store, you can promote your business and market your
products for free. Though some of the websites verify the genuineness of your business to protect the interest of the customers, the users and the
reputation of the e-commerce site.

OLX , GTB smemarkethub, Konga marketplace etc are few examples of e-
commerce sites that offer such service for free.

4. FORUM

Subscribing to community forums or forums related to your business niche
can also promote your business. Create an interesting and informative
profile on the forum, make a link which includes your page and contact as
your signature on the profile.

On these forums, you can create topics and thread with informative content
about your business industry, and creatively introduce your business at the bottom line of every post.

Subscription and creating thread on these forum is free as long as you adhere to the conditions laid by the moderators of the forums.

If your post is informative and readers find it resourceful to them, they will
want to find more about you, which will direct them to your profile and
link. Then, they will know what you are doing and what you offer.

5. START A BLOG

To promote your business or product, you can start a blog to share useful
information that will benefit your target market. Discuss problems about
the industry and products, then offer solutions to the problems.

Write posts that will benefit your target market and the entire society on
your blog, this will increase the traffic of your blog. Traffic is the soul of any online business, by building traffic for your blog, you are increasing public awareness for your business.

You can start a blog for free on Google blogger, wordpress and couple of
other web design websites.

6. SOCIAL MEDIA/BLOG COMMENTS

Start or participate in discussions and updates concerning your business
industry on the social media network. Make comments on updates that
attracts comments on social media sites, especially updates that are related to your niche.

Make useful comment on blogs and don’t forget to leave your URL and
contacts at the end of every post. Contributing to discussion or starting one on social media or the blog does not cost you anything but creativity and skillful art of writing.

  1. Awesome blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or
goo for a paid option? There are so many choices outt there that
I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any recommendations?
    Appreciate it!
