How to identify your firelighters

In life, either in business, leadership or politics, there are 3 groups of people who will feature in your experience: The firefighters, The onlookers
and The firelighters. They play different and important roles on your journey. Watch out for these three people and centre your energy on
sorrounding yourself with the firelighters.

I gave details on these 3 people on my previous post here: Firefighters, Onlookers & Firelighters  In this post, I am emphasizing my focus on The Firelighters.

Firelighters are people who share some characteristics of greatness with you. They have vision, they believe in other people’s dream and ideas. They encourage and support people to live their dreams.

Firelighters criticize moderately and sometimes offer better alternatives when they have some iota of pessimism in other people’s idea. They are always there to encourage you and bring the best out
of you. These rare people are among family, friends, classmates, professional colleagues, associates etc.

It is your responsibility to identify these firelighters around you and use your relationship with them as an inspiration and springboard to achieve your dreams. I would help you with some of the traits I have
found in firelighters by sharing them below:

Attraction
It takes natural likeness to watch someone, follow his dream, and create time to support such dream. There are some people who natural likeness for you, beyond writing or saying. The people who are always excited to hear positive things from and about you are the
firelighters.

Their words are encouraging and inspiring. The more you get closer to these people, the more you are motivated to keep believing in your dreams.

They monitor
They follow you up either openly or secretly. It may take a short while and it may take a long time before you discover that you are being followed by such people, but you will find out somehow. You can learn
this from their reaction or comments in your conversations with them.

I have mentors and role models who would not say a word to me unless I go to them with my questions or seek advice, opinion or support. Yet, they monitor my activities and sometimes come in when necessary.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about branding on my social media wall, and I got a motivating comment of only 3 letter words, from a mentor who keeps a tab on me. The interesting thing is that I never believed he would have time to read long posts on personal social
media profile, and taking out of his busy time to drop a comment. In the comment, he signifies that I am quickly learning from some of the skills he has, which I am also trying to develop.

Firelighters will come in when it necessary. They will show up at some point; sometimes when you expect them and the other time when you do not expect them.

They encourage you
They believe in your dreams, so they encourage you every time. They encourage you to fight on, when obstacles show their ugly faces. They also celebrate every little challenge you overcome.

Firelighters believe in the qualities they see in you, therefore, they inspire you to fulfill your dreams through their support, either my word or action.

They don’t condemn, they criticize
Do not expect approval to your ideas every time you share it with people, not even from those who believe in you. If you yourself could have scale of preferences of your ideas and you discard some of it for the other, you should expect criticism from those who sincerely believe in your dreams.

However, what stands firelighters out from the other people is that; while some people may condemn your ideas, firelighters will criticize the ideas moderately without trashing your effort of coming up with such ideas.

Firelighters would rather tell you what is not right in the ideas, instead of what is wrong in them.

They offer and render support
Mistakes and failures are part of success tools. You are bound to make mistakes with your dream, idea concept or career.

Firelighters come from their hiding to offer assistance; if you accept it, they render the necessary help or support to keep you going after your mistakes.

They give feedback
There is no source of motivation that is greater than feedback from people. Whether it is a positive or negative feedback, it is always useful for you to know where you are, on achieving your dreams.

Firelighters are the set of people you will certainly get sincere response from. Getting feed from these people will cost you nothing but sharing the dream or idea with them.

Their identity pops up in your memories.
This is a psychological fact. Your personal encounter with people will stay in your memory for a long time, particularly the good experiences. Experience from good memories, will naturally make you pin some information about people featured in the positive encounter at the top of your memory bank, on and off-hand.

People who are prominent in your book of good memories tend to be your firelighters.

These are few traits I remember from personal experiences about firelighters, if you have experienced some of these qualities in people and you have more of the characteristics of the firelighters to share, please feel free to share with us.
